Hi Everyone! In this Bonsai video we are back with my Cascade Squamata Juniper Bonsai this tree is of the variety "Blue Star". The Bonsai was pruned back hard to create better taper on the trunk and I also added some guy wire to pull the crown closer to the trunk.

I’ll walk you through important steps in shaping and pruning, including creating taper on the trunk, cleaning up moss, and using cut putty to seal large cuts. I’ll also demonstrate specific pruning techniques for back budding on Squamata Junipers without removing too many terminal buds so the tree can remain healthy. I also show how to correct a competing trunkline on the apex for a more appealing appearance and better plan for the tree long term.

Throughout the video, I explain key wiring techniques, including applying the two-branch principle and using a guy wire for gradual adjustments. You'll learn how to wire pads on a Juniper bonsai for future growth and refinement. Stick around for the beauty shots and winter care tips, plus a special bonus where I open a package from Chris at the end!

I think the Squamata Juniper is an excellent choice for cascade bonsai due to its natural growth habits and flexible branches. Its ability to thrive in harsh conditions mirrors the aesthetic of a tree clinging to the side of a cliff, which is the essence of the cascade style. The cascading form is achieved by carefully training the tree to grow downward, and juniper's pliability allows for precise shaping over time without the branches breaking. Junipers develop dense foliage pads that can be meticulously shaped (even with this variety surprisingly), adding to the dramatic effect of the cascade.
