Hi everyone! In this video I show you how to make Bonsai from Lemon Cypress. This species is relatively cheap easy to find in most garden centres making it an excellent choice for those who are beginners to Bonsai!
I begin by revealing more of the tree’s deadwood, a technique that enhances the Bonsai’s maturity and gives it the appearance of a larger, more natural tree. After this, I explore various design options. It's important to remember that there's rarely just one way to design a Bonsai, as most trees offer multiple possibilities, and it's up to you to choose the design that best highlights its unique features.
Once I’ve cleaned up the tree to get a clearer view of its structure, I move on to refining the Jin. The flow between the Jin and Shari seemed disjointed, so I decided to connect them, which improved the overall design. Along the way, I also cover the tools used in this process. Finally, I demonstrate how to apply wire to the Bonsai, followed by the process of shaping and pruning it into its next stage of development.
Why Are Lemon Cypress Good For Bonsai?
I think the Lemon Cypress, also known as a Goldcrest Cypress and Cupressus Macrocarpa trees are fantastic for Bonsai because of their striking, lime-green foliage. Their naturally compact growth makes them perfect for shaping and styling, and the fresh, citrus scent is a unique bonus that makes working on them a pleasure!
I also appreciate how quickly they adapt to bonsai techniques, giving me the freedom to refine their shape over time. One of the things I love most about Lemon Cypress is how well they develop impressive deadwood features, like Jin and Shari, which really enhance the aged, natural look I aim for in my trees.
