In this Bonsai video I am Pruning an Overgrown Juniper Bonsai that has been growing in a pond basket for just two years.

The Juniper in this video was bought at a garden centre for £8.00. Although it is a cheaper piece of material, I believe that in the future with the correct techniques a great Bonsai can be made from it. Bonsai need not be expensive or complicated. The specific genus of Juniper I am working with is not 100% known to me. It could be a Rocky Mountain Juniper Bonsai, Sabina Juniper, Goldcrest or another variation of a Juniper Horizontalis. If you think you know what this one is specifically, let me know in the comments!

Throughout the video, I cover various Bonsai Pruning Techniques that you can apply to the majority of Junipers. Pruning to reduce the vigour of a branch, pruning for better ramification and when not to prune so that a particular branch can thicken and match the overall style of the tree in the design that you are aiming for.

Juniper Bonsai are known for their flexibility and hardiness and are perfect for anyone who is into Bonsai. They love well-draining soil, regular watering and need lots of sunlight to thrive. For best results, place your Juniper Bonsai outdoors in a bright location with some afternoon shade. Fertilize during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth. If you want long growth and your goal is to thicken the trunk, I recommend a high nitrogen fertiliser.
