Hi, everyone! I am exceted to share another video filmed in my friend Attila Csintalan's garden. Making Bonsai may seem tricky if you are new to it, but in this step-by-step video, we will show you how you can easily do it yourself in your own garden. You don't need any fancy Bonsai tools to get started, and Bonsai wire/Aluminum wire is relatively cheap in smaller rolls.

The Mugo Pine material we're working with is fairly common and easy to find at most garden centers. While these trees aren’t typically grown with bonsai in mind, they often come with certain "flaws" that I'll guide you through correcting in this video. When choosing your material, take the time to really examine the tree—lift it up, study its structure. Ideally, you'll want to look for a thick trunk with good taper, and every now and then, you might just stumble upon a hidden gem waiting to be transformed!

When I first got started in Bonsai, I thought that Bonsai were specific trees from Japan. But the surprising reality is that ANY tree can be made into a Bonsai, though trees with naturally "small growing" foliage definitely make the job easier!

When pruning a Pine, it's important to remember that you should never repot the tree in the same growing season. Pruning is a significant stressor on the tree, and combining it with repotting can overwhelm the Bonsai, potentially leading to poor health or even failure to recover. It is generally safe to remove about half of the foliage without causing too much strain on the tree. However, removing up to two-thirds of the foliage is riskier. While it can be done, it requires extra care and attention to ensure the tree has the strength to recover. With proper aftercare, like appropriate watering, shading, and careful monitoring, the tree should bounce back, but the risks are higher with more aggressive pruning.
